In this heartwarming short film, we follow the story of FeiFei, a Chinese girl growing up in a Welsh village, as she navigates her unique cultural identity. FeiFei's world is a fascinating blend of languages and traditions, and her journey begins in a Chinese restaurant, where she chats with her hardworking mother.
This 14-minute Mandarin, English, and Welsh masterpiece is part of the 'Discovering Home' collection, showcased at the 69th BFI London Film Festival. The film stars the talented Kexin Wang as our curious protagonist, FeiFei, alongside an ensemble cast including Ah Mui Lau, Jessica Dong, and more.
But here's where it gets controversial... FeiFei, despite her Chinese heritage, initially rejects her mother's folklore. She's a first-generation English speaker, well-integrated into her Welsh surroundings. However, a magical encounter changes everything, and FeiFei discovers a deeper connection to her roots.
The film's director, Luo Jian, shares her inspiration: "When I first moved to the UK, I felt lonely, especially during the dark winter months. But a family trip to Wales brought me comfort, reminding me of my hometown in China's Gobi Desert. I saw hints of China everywhere in Wales, from the green landscapes to the Welsh dragon statues."
And this is the part most people miss... Jian's personal experiences greatly influenced the film. Originally, the script focused on a newly arrived immigrant's loneliness. But after casting Kexin Wang, who was born in the UK and speaks Chinese at home, the script evolved. It became a story about a second-generation kid, exploring her relationship with a culture that isn't her own firsthand experience.
The film's symbolism is also intriguing. Fish and dragons, common in Chinese culture, represent striving for a better life. But FeiFei and her mother's skepticism towards these tales adds a layer of complexity.
