Pastoral Letter by Deacon Eric Sorensen
Pastoral Letter by Deacon Eric Sorensen
"In this Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scouts, has taken note of the primacy of being prepared: our duty to God and to others, and being morally straight, which is the essence of the preaching of John the Baptist."
“Be Prepared!” We all know about preparation! We’re busy! Planning for all that must be done these holidays. It starts with Halloween. We have thought of the decorations and candy needed. Then Thanksgiving, invitations were sent or travel plans booked. Meanwhile, we are pulling out the Christmas lights and mounting the tree. After that we make sure the gifts are purchased and wrapped and placed under the tree. We plan; we arrange; we anticipate every detail for the perfect holiday event. We are prepared!
Perhaps, we are just taking the Scout Motto to heart: “Be Prepared.” Robert Baden-Powell, who founded the Boy Scouts, wrote in his 1908 handbook, “to be prepared meant that you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty.” And as the Scout Oath promises, one’s duty pertains to one’s “Duty to God and Country, Duty to other people, and Duty to ourself.” This is all achieved by each scout being physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. In this Robert has taken note of the primacy of being prepared: our duty to God and to others, and being morally straight, which is the essence of the preaching of John the Baptist.
In the Gospel we hear John desperately crying out with the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” John’s warning is not just for the religious leaders of his time, but for all us, for all time. He cries out for us to “Prepare the way” through repentance, and to “make straight our paths” by restoring our allegiance to God. Especially during this season of Advent, in which we prepare by remembering the First Coming of the Son of God, and anticipate his Return.
Yes, the Church plans, arranges and anticipates every detail to help us focus on the reason for the season. John’s calling us to recognize the Kingdom of Heaven, which is now at hand. The Son of God has already been born, grown, and ascended into Heaven … and promised to Return again. Additionally, he has revealed that God is not far off, but is already in our midst. In this John the Baptist recognizes and serves as a model for the Church in discerning the presence of our Savior in our lives, in our communities, in our world.
Indeed, Scouts are asked to be prepared, and so must we as people of faith. We too have a Duty to God and to others, as our primary focus. We too are called to be morally straight by repenting our ways and aligning with Christ’s ways. We too must recognize the reason for the season in Christ’s presence in our lives; in his promise to return in glory; and in his plan of salvation for us all … for the whole world. Yes, in this way we will “Be Prepared” for the Perfect Event, the Kingdom of Heaven!
